One standout initiative is the "Development of Subtitling and Editing Technology for Colloquial Broadcast Content," a project running from 2022 to December 2024. This initiative focuses on developing technology to transcribe conversational broadcast dialogue into subtitles using AI neural networks. The project is spearheaded by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP), with participation from companies like Twigfarm and Wavve.

According to an IITP report, while AI translation has seen remarkable progress with the advent of neural networks, quality issues persist in specialized domains such as medicine, patents, legal texts, and colloquial broadcast content. Particularly in broadcasting, advanced technology is needed to account for slang, technical terms, and idiomatic expressions.

The project began with research to generate subtitles from the voice metadata held by OTT platforms. Currently, R&D is underway to convert extracted text into English subtitles.

The resulting technology is expected to contribute to future government projects, such as the "AI Dubbing and Localization" initiative. Rapidly generated translations could also be converted into audio, paving the way for more advanced dubbing solutions.
